A Medical Committee from Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University reveals the causes of the Gill rot disease (Branchiomycosis) that caused the death of thousands of tons of river fish

Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University established a specialized medical committee from the technical institute of Babel under the supervision of the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Abdul Kadhim Jafar al-Yasiri, in order to investigate the reasons behind the environmental disaster in Babel governorate due to the death of huge number of fish in Al-Sada area. The committee started its duties by visiting the scene of the infection on 3/11/2018 and 5/11/2018.
Assistant Professor Dr. Abbas Razak Abdul, a specialist in medicine and toxins who is the head of the committee said that the members of the Committee collected samples of infected fish for the purpose of clinical tests as well as the bacterial transplantation. Collected samples were blood samples along with swabs From the Gill area of the infected fish.
The Committee revealed that the Gill rot disease is a disease of fungal spread among the river fish and cause a huge lost “because of the damage of the fish’s Gill that restricts the infected fish from normal breathing” causing death.
The Committee also warned of the spread of thousands of tons of dead fish and their spread Al-Furat River and its related branches.
The Committee also recommended that the central and local governments and fish farmers should remove the dead fish from the water since it poses a health hazard to the lives of people thereby providing a suitable environment for the growth of microorganisms that could cause pollution of drinking water.
