Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University Overview
Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University is a public university affiliated to the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Its main campus located in Al-Najaf City/Kufa one of Al-Furat Al-Awsat provinces of the Republic of Iraq. The university was established in 2014 after being emerged from the Technical Education Authority, which was founded in 1969. It includes four technical colleges and seven technical institutes in different disciplines (medical, engineering, administrative, agricultural and applied arts) which are distributed over five major cities located within Al-Furat Al-Awsat province of Iraq namely “Al-Najaf – Babylon – Karbala – Diwaniyah and Al-Muthanna cities”.
The University offers the Technical Diploma, Technical Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees in various disciplines. The university has 950 academic staff members with master and doctorate qualifications and 3200 employees with bachelor degree and technical diploma. Those are separated over the above mentioned collages and technical institutes namely; Technical College of Health and Medical/kufa, Technical College of Al-Mussaib, Technical College of Administrative and Management/Kufa, Technical College of Engineering/Najaf, Technical Institute of Babylon, Technical Institute of Najaf, Technical Institute of Al-Mussaib, Technical Institute of kufa, Technical Institute of Karbala, Technical Institute of AL–Qadasya, Technical Institute of Semawa.
Iraqi citizen students with high school qualifications from all over Iraq are welcome to continue their higher technical studies at Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University technical collages and institutes. The process is pre-determined by the Iraqi ministry of higher education and scientific research depending on his/her individual achievement and marks during the final ministerial exams. International students are also welcome up on the recognition of their overseas high school certificates by the Ministry.
Study periods for technical collages and institutes are four and two years of full time in class (face to face) respectively. It should be mentioned that remote study programs are yet not offered by the university and hence they are hold as futuristic development plans.
Highly distinguished graduates of technical institutes will be able to continue their academic study for technical bachelor degrees while those who obtained their technical bachelor degrees are able to apply for scholarships of Master and PhD study programs offered by Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University. Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University also offers evening study programs in some fields at selective technical collages and institutes. Such programs are similar to those of offered by morning studies.
In addition to its main libraries, Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University is emphasising on developing the electronic learning (e-learning) system as part of its major ongoing development scheme. It encourages all academic staff to upload their lectures and text electronic-books and other study materials in the main university website to be available for all students all time. Also as a part of the development scheme, the university is encouraging and supporting the construction and use of renewable energy facilities such as (solar energy and biomass) all over its main campus, collages and institutes. It should be mentioned that such technologies are yet not very common in developing country such as the Republic of Iraq. It also financially supports all researches carried out in such fields of expertise.
In this respect, since its emergence in 2014, Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University is asserting on getting scholarships from well recognized worldwide universities for its outstanding academic staff members to continue their educations around renewable energy fields. It also rewards and encourages its academic staff in conducting researches and publishing as much as possible scientific articles and participating in international scientific conferences and meetings. It also welcomes and rewards international professors and experts to visit and give lectures in his/her field of expertise.

Its mission includes; providing excellent updated technical education, preparing highly qualified technical staff capable of effectively dealing work challenges, provide researchers and academic staff with the financial and facilitation supports to carry out his/her scientific researches and publish their findings in rigid scientific journals, carry out technical educational programs that could meet the national work force requirements, establishing secure cooperation and friendship bonds with high ranked international universities and educational institutes. Promoting projects that could improve the life style of both local and national societies. Attracting and rewarding the international lecturers and professors who are willing to join the university academic staff for short and long term employment contracts.
